University of Maryland Center for Health & Homeland Security will discuss emergency preparedness, family notification systems and Alert Montgomery.  Co-hosted with Little Falls Village and Neighbors Assisting Neighbors.

Joe Corona will discuss some of the hazards that Montgomery County faces, both natural and man-made, and steps that you can take to prepare yourself for those events. We’ll discuss how to stay informed, write a plan, build a kit and get involved. Resources will be provided to attendees so that they can continue the planning process.

The first part of the presentation is about how OEMHS coordinates response efforts, using examples such as the derecho, snowstorms, Flower Branch explosion, and water main breaks. The second part of the presentation is about top hazards Montgomery County faces, including thunderstorms, extreme heat/cold, flooding, tropical storms, and less common events such as earthquakes and tornados. The presentation will discuss the options of sheltering in place or evacuation, including what it will take to do either one at a moment’s notice.

Prior to his work with Montgomery County OEMHS, Joe Corona worked for FEMA in the first implementation of the National Disaster Recovery Framework (NDRF) for a catastrophic event (Hurricane Sandy).
