with Hank Thomas (Walter Johnson's grandson) and Bruce Adams (founder of Bethesda Big Train. Learn about the Montgomery County roots of baseball’s all-time greatest pitcher Walter Johnson. Discovered on the playing fields of Weiser, Idaho and brought to Washington in 1907 at the age of 19 to pitch for the Senators, Walter Johnson was one of the five inaugural members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Johnson family moved to Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda in 1925 to escape the big city and then to a farm in Germantown. After his baseball playing and managing career ended, Johnson served as a member of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners.
